Matthew has been involved in volleyball since the early 90’s when he had the opportunity to learn the game as a cross training sport for baseball. He was able to play beach and and Jr Olympics under the mentorship of Coach Dave Herron who would eventually become his collegiate coach at Northland International university after his baseball career ended in 1995
Coach Herron’s impact on the future of Matthew in the coaching world was incredible. Coach Herron won back-to-back-to-back State championships in Orange County California and was also an assistant for UCLA. His ability to break the game down into keywords or phrases is something Matthew remembers and uses to this day. Matthew’s playing career really flourished during the 4 years of college playing for Coach Herron. He was the starting setter all 4 years and captain his final two..
Matthew always wanted to go into the coaching field after his playing career. Being able to play under a great coach pushed him to want to continue in the sport for years to follow. He has been involved in 4 different State championships as a coach, the last being in 2019 while coaching with Allatoona High School. Matthew has coached at the club, high school, and collegiate level and has sent players to many D1 and D2 universities over the years. Currently with players at Georgia Southern, Life, Shorter, and Georgia College.
Matthew has found a niche in the game as a personal instructor and also doing team Academies. His passion for training has been the consistent connection to the game for the past 30 years. His passion is seeing the development of athletes from beginner to the highest level they want to pursue. Matthew has done team academies in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North, and South Carolina.
Matthew is married to Rachel Kempf, and they have 4 children: Chandler (21), Salem (17) Emma (15) and Brooklyn (14) and have lived in Carrollton and been involved in the community since 2008.
